Bringing Colour to Mental Health through Surfing
While the world's best waited for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Bonsoy to recommence, OneWave has been bringing colour to mental health at local schools and delivered a Fluro Friday meet-up during the event period.
In collaboration with the World Surf League and Hydralyte, OneWave ran 'Free the Funk' Programs, which impacted more than 2,000 students at six primary and secondary schools across the Surf Coast region this past week. The program sessions educated students on mental health tips and tools that they can use for the rest of their lives.
On Friday 7th April, OneWave also organised a Fluro Friday at Torquay Beach. A 40-plus group dressed up in bright fluro outfits and shared waves and stories to raise awareness of mental health.
How will the funds help OneWave help more people?
WHO IS ONEWAVE?
OneWave is a non-profit surf community raising awareness of mental health through a simple recipe…saltwater therapy, surfing and fluro. Sometimes one wave is all it takes! Since launching in March 2013 OneWave has created a global impact, raising awareness and reducing social stigmas around mental health challenges through their Fluro Friday Sessions and Free the Funk School Programs.
WHERE WILL THE FUNDS GO?
The funds raised from the heritage board auctions will support OneWave’s preventative mental health programs:
Every $5 raised - gives one young person the chance to be part of Free the Funk School Program and learn mental health tools that will last a lifetime and also supports Fluro Friday events.
Every $100 raised - gives 20 young people the chance to be part of Free the Funk School Program and learn mental health tools that will last a lifetime and also supports Fluro Friday events.
Every $1,000 raised - funds one Free the Funk School Program, which impacts 200+ young people on average and also helps OneWave continue to provide free Fluro Friday community events.
