ONEWAVE GLOBAL FLURO FRIDAY
FRIDAY 13 OCTOBER - SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
OneWave runs weekly Fluro Friday sessions where we dress up in bright fluro outfits and share waves and stories to raise awareness of mental health.
To support Mental Health Week, we are organising a GLOBAL FLURO FRIDAY on Friday, 13 October, and we would be so stoked if you organised a fluro surf or swim at your local beach to help bring more colour to mental health.
Register your beach by completing the registration form below. We will send more event information and create posters to promote your local event.
How does the Fluro Friday event run?
On Fluro Friday, 13 October, we will all meet up at our local beaches dressed in our brightest Fluro to raise awareness of mental health through our simple recipe of saltwater therapy, surfing and fluro. Below is an example of how the timings could work, and you can adapt this to what works best for your beach:
6 am - People arrive - Welcome new people and introduce them to other people in the OneWave community. If they don’t have any Fluro, it would be awesome if you could offer them some fluro zinc or a Hawaiian lei if you have spares and that makes them feel part of the fluro community.
6.35 am - Quick welcome talk - Before we head out for a surf or swim, we do a quick intro about OneWave. Here is an introduction you could use, and feel free to adapt this to add your personal stories and the reasons you are so passionate about organising a Fluro Friday event:
OneWave is a non-profit surf community raising awareness of mental health through a simple recipe…saltwater therapy, surfing and fluro. OneWave runs weekly Fluro Friday sessions where we dress up in bright fluro outfits and share waves and stories to raise awareness of mental health. Sometimes, one wave is all it takes to free the funk and wearing bright colours makes people happy and helps start conversations about mental health, which is often invisible.
6.40 am - Fluro Friday community photo - This is an awesome way of making people feel part of the OneWave community by getting a big fluro group photo. It would be amazing if you could capture some fluro photos and videos and tag @onewaveisallittakes #flurofriday.
6.45 am - People then go for a surf or swim or join the anti-bad vibes circle if you want to provide this at your beach (optional). The “anti-bad vibes circle” allows people to have conversations about mental health in a safer judgemental space and is facilitated by volunteer OneWave Tribe Leaders. We help connect people with professional mental health services if they require professional support.
From 7.30 am - Breakfast and coffee at Surfish Bondi Beach Cafe at the Bondi Beach Pavilion.

We are super grateful to you for organising a Fluro Friday at your local beach. Thank you for your amazing support! We understand that being a OneWave Tribe Leader in your community is not easy sometimes, so we wanted to provide some information to ensure you feel comfortable if one of the community needs some support. Remember, the first thing to remember is to take care of your mental health first.

Tips and tools to support someone in the community who might be going through a funk:
Remember, we are not professionals and are not saying we can fix it. We are just sharing our recipe of saltwater therapy, surfing and fluro that has helped us make things that little bit easier.
Letting them know you are there for a chat can make all the difference. Just listen, give them a big hug and ask them what support they need from you right now.
If you feel they need professional assistance or could benefit from counselling, encourage them to see their GP and/or call Lifeline 13 11 14.
